Horizon Europe Pillar 2: Key Opportunities in Health and Digital Transformation and Other Clusters

The Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness pillar 2 supports research relating to societal challenges and reinforces technological and industrial capacities through clusters. It sets EU missions with ambitious goals tackling some of our biggest problems. It also includes activities pursued by the Joint Research Centre which supports EU and national policymakers with independent scientific evidence and technical support. Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2 focuses on tackling global challenges in health, food security, climate, energy, and digital transformation.

Generative AI in Research: New Guidelines from the European Commission

Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are rapidly transforming a wide range of activities, including research, and will continue to do so in the coming years. While these tools offer powerful capabilities for various tasks, it’s essential to recognize that they also pose certain challenges and limitations. As these technologies evolve, researchers must adopt them responsibly to maximize their potential while minimizing risks.

Recognizing this, the European Commission, along with the countries and stakeholders represented in the ERA Forum, have jointly developed a set of guidelines aimed at fostering the responsible adoption of generative AI tools within the European research community. These new guidelines offer practical, actionable recommendations to help scientists and researchers integrate AI technologies into their work while addressing ethical, methodological, and regulatory considerations.

The launched guidelines consolidate ideas from various stakeholders and aim to reassure researchers about the safe and effective use of generative AI in scientific domains. They cover key areas such as data privacy, intellectual property, transparency, and accountability in AI-assisted research, ensuring that these tools are used responsibly and ethically.

Ongoing Updates and Community Engagement

These guidelines are not static. Given the rapid pace of technological advancements in AI, the European Commission plans to regularly update the guidelines to reflect new developments and emerging best practices. The research community is encouraged to stay engaged in this process by providing feedback and suggestions.

You can share your views and contribute to future versions of the guidelines through the feedback form (https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/feedback_GenAIResearch ) provided by the European Commission. This ongoing dialogue will ensure that the guidelines remain relevant and continue to address the evolving needs of the scientific community as it embraces AI technologies.
